Mobile internet

Till the end of 2020, the total population in Vietnam reached 97.58 million people, an increase of 1,098 million people, equivalent to an increase of 1.14% compared to 2019, according to the General Statistics Office. The total number of internet users in Vietnam reached 69.24 million people, the number of mobile internet users was 66.84 (accounting for 96% of the total internet users in Vietnam).

Mobile internet users are predicted to reach 66.84 million in 2020 (accounting for 71% of the total population) and increase to 82.15 million in 2025.

Symbian OS (popular on the Nokia, Ericsson và Motorola devices) was the most widely used smartphone operating system in Vietnam until 2011 when it was overtaken by iOS and Android. From 2013 to 2020, Android and iOS are the two leading mobile operating systems in Vietnam. In 2020, Android took more than 60% of the market share, while iOS accounted for more than 35% of the market share of mobile operating systems. Along with that, Apple (36.2%) and Samsung (30.6%) are two leading mobile vendors across Vietnam as of 2020. 

App overview

According to the report published by Statista, the total consumer spending on mobile apps in Vietnam grew significantly in 2020. Specifically, the consumer expenditures on mobile apps increased by 179.4% compared to 2018.

The total number of mobile apps downloaded in Vietnam in 2020 reached 2.78 billion apps, an increase of 40 million downloaded apps compared to 2018. The most downloaded mobile apps categories on Android are Games (64.5%), Tools (5.5%), Photo (4.9%), Social network (4.4.%), Entertainment (3.8%), Other (16.9%).

Leading Vietnamese app publishers on Google Play Store include Zalo Group (281.5 million downloads), LuuTinh Developer (152 million downloaded), Recorder & smart apps (130 million downloaded), AZ mobile software (128 million downloaded), ECO MOBILE VN (106, 29), Assistive Touch Team (101 million downloaded), AZ Screen Recorder (82 million downloaded); 9xgeneration (77 million downloaded), VinSmart (72 million downloaded), Rubycell Entertainment (68 million downloaded).

The most downloaded mobile apps categories on iOS are Games (41.2%), Photos and videos (8.1%), etc. Leading apps among iOS users include Facebook, Youtube, Zalo, Messenger, Tiktok. The biggest reason for this increase is that the impact of Covid-19 and the previous period of social distancing has changed Vietnamese people's habits and increased the time to interact with the world via smartphones.

User behavior

Vietnamese people tend to use the Internet for Entertainment more than working, and others aim. This was shown in the share of mobile apps usage among internet users in Vietnam in the 3rd quarter of 2020, 94.7% of respondents spent time online for Chat (messengers), 94.5 for Social networking, 83.4% for Entertainment and video, 72.4% for Map; 68.5% for Shopping.

The number of mobile applications used per week also increased by 31%, from 16.8 apps to 22.1 apps. The biggest reason for this increase is that the impact of Covid-19 and the previous period of social distancing has changed Vietnamese people's habits and increased the time to interact with the world via smartphones. 72 million Vietnamese people use social networks, equivalent to 73% of the population.

On average, they spent 2 hours 21 minutes using social media daily. The above statistics partly reflect specific characteristics of the Vietnamese people. It is openness, love of technology, and always needs to be exchanged and connected.

Social media apps

Leading social media apps in Vietnam as of the 2nd quarter of 2021 is Facebook (accounting for 96% share of respondents); followed by Youtube (86%), Zalo (85%), Instagram (50%), Tiktok (46%), Pinterest (26%), Twitter (21%), LinkedIn (9%), Gapo (2%), Lotus (2%).

For short video trends, Facebook is still the leading mobile app used by most Vietnamese, followed by YouTube and Tiktok.

Mobile game apps

The Covid-19 pandemic had a strong impact on the online game market in 2020, causing a sharp increase in the demand for mobile gaming globally. Vietnam also shares this trend when all indicators of downloads the number of games have increased sharply compared to 2019.

According to the report "Mobile apps in Vietnam" published recently by Statista showed, when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, people were forced to social distance, so playing mobile games became popular, attracting many new players.

On average, Vietnamese people spend 7 to 12 hours a week playing video games on mobile devices. Leading mobile esports games in Vietnam in 2020 based on several downloads to include Garena Free Fire (18.24 million downloads), Arena of Valor (14.65 million downloads), PUBG Mobile (9.56 million downloads), Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (6.43 million downloads); Call Of Duty Mobile (3.19 million downloads), Wild Rift (1.19 million downloads).

Dating apps

With 97 million people and an average age of 31 years, Vietnam is one of the youngest and most dynamic economies globally. That is also why online dating service companies consider Vietnam a potential destination.

According to the report,  as of September 2020, 46% of people surveyed used mobile dating apps, in which 34% of respondents used this app several times a week, 22% of daily use, 19% use dating apps several times a month, etc. Most of the surveyed people say they use this app to find a long-term romantic/relationship; 30% want to meet new people, 14% for their Entertainment, 10% for casual hook-ups, etc.

As of September 2020, Tinder (62.02%) is the leading mobile dating app in Vietnam; the following popular dating apps are Others (17.28%), OKCupid (15.37%), YmeetMe (12.7%), Coffee Meets Bagel (12.7$), Grindr (10.72%), Bumble (9.9%), Tantan (8.47%), Paktor (6.35%).

Food delivery and ride-hailing apps

Although the food delivery market in Vietnam is quite new, it is incredibly vibrant. Leading food delivery apps that own a large number of users include ShopeeFood (formerly known as Now), accounting for 42% of the market share, GrabFood accounting for 40%, GoJek accounting for 9%, and Woowa Brothers Corp. entered the food delivery market in Vietnam by acquiring Vietnam, then renamed Bae Min (May 14, 2019) accounting for 9%.

Due to the pandemic, ride-hailing apps in Vietnam were severely affected when many services had to stop working in the Covid-19 epidemic and changed their operation, focusing on delivery services, grocery shopping, and promoting the cashless ecosystem.

The leading ride-hailing services based on market share in Vietnam are as follows: Grab (73%), Be (16%), Gojek (10%). Besides, the most popular car ride-hailing services based on usage in Vietnam are Grab (66%), Be (22%), FastGo (8%), MyGo (8%), VATO (4%), Others (2%).

Conclusion

The demand for smartphone usage increased, bringing the number of phone applications to 25.7 compared to 22.1 applications in 2020. The rate of using many applications is also concentrated in people under the age of 26. Vietnamese users spend 1/5 of their daily time on social networking applications, watching videos, messages/online calls. The remaining time is spent on gaming applications, searching, or shopping online, especially during quarantine.
